Marcuse, Ellul, and the Science-Fiction Film: Negative Responses to Technology

چکیده

In contrast o SF literature, most SF films have responded negatively to technolog, seeing it as a force in contemporary society that has had a deleterious effect on the quality of human life. Herbert Marcuse and Jacques Ellul, two of the most pessimistic analysts, have expressed their criticisms of technology in ways that also find expression in some of these films, which are preoccupied with many of the same issues. Three in particular-Forbidden Planet (1956), Colossus: The Forbin Project (1969), and Alien (1979)-can be seen as responses to the theorists in question. In each case the films adopt positions tha4 while sympathetic with many aspects of Marcuse's indictment of technology, challenge his belief that this technology could ever be a vehicle for human liberation. In contrast, they assume positions closer to that of Ellul, who sees technology's effect on the quality of human life as thoroughly debilitating. Appendix : Interviews with Experts in the Field of Technoethics

Question: How did you get involved in research in Technoethics and why? I was a technophile at an early age. I loved experimenting with electricity as a child and I started college in pursuit of an engineering career. I came of age in the 1960s when the United States was embroiled in an ill-conceived, protracted war against a small Third-World nation. The innocent views I held about technology ...

Add-on for High Throughput Screening in Material Discovery for Organic Electronics: “Tagging” Molecules to Address the Device Considerations

This work reflects the worth of intelligent modeling in controlling the nanostructure morphology in manufacturing organic bulk heterojunction (BHJ) solar cells. It suggests the idea of screening the pool of material design possibilities inspired by machine learning. To fulfill this goal, a set of experimental data on a BHJ solar cell with a donor structure of diketopyrrolopyrrole (DDP) and ...

The Potential of Nanoparticles for Upgrading Thin Film Nanocomposite Membranes – A Review

Over the past decade, many applications were intended for filtration by membrane technology especially the thin film composite (TFC) membranes. In advanced developments of thin film membranes, an attempt was made to spread a new generation of membranes called thin film nano composite (TFN) membranes. However, in the last generation of TFNs, an ultrathin selective film of nanoparticles is coated...

Preparation and Characterization of Pullulan-Soy Protein Concentrate Biocomposite Film

The non-biodegradable nature of plastic packaging has brought about an attention in bio-basedpackaging materials. Edible composite films were prepared using soy protein concentrate (SPC) and pullulan(PUL) biopolymer at five different ratio (100:0; 70:30; 50:50; 30:70 and 0:100) with glycerol as plasticizer bycasting-evaporation method. The thickness, mechanical properties, water vapor permeabil...
